Parenting With George shares tricks and tips that Robyn Pancoast learned as a teacher and applied as a parent — and that were inspired by George.

Dr. George H. Richmond was a poet, painter, inventor and educator. He loved children, believed in their power and understood their needs. At the age of 22, George was a rookie teacher in a classroom of unruly fifth graders who didn’t want to read or write. But he believed in their potential and thought he could tap it by figuring out what motivated them and then inspiring them to learn. He created a miniature world inside his classroom and called it MicroSociety. It was a place where children could put classroom lessons into practice in a real world just for kids. His idea took off. MicroSociety has grown out of the classroom and taken over schools in five countries.

What George taught Robyn as a teacher also guides her as a mother. George's approach to managing discipline and encouraging responsibility and respect for others — and his remarkable approach for tapping the extraordinary in every child — helps her navigate the challenges of raising children in this complicated world.
